Since the Soviet Union has fallen apart there has been peace and order in the biggest part of Europe. Is this about to change and are we heading into an era of unrest, political struggles, and a new cold war? Just like in 1984.
“He who controls
the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past.” -
This is the slogan from The Party in 1984.
Although it doesn’t appear that often in the novel, it is of large significance
for the regime. I believe that the Vladimir Putin’s regime is starting to
behave just like in 1984 the government is. I will explain to
you why.
Putin’s plans to
control his people are slow but will eventually have a big influence. He has
already lost a lot of confidence outside of his country and he doesn’t want to lose
this confidence inside his country. That is why I think he changes the
constitution slowly.
Just like in 1984 Vladimir
Putin has “revised” his version the acts by Stalin and the Red Army during the
Second World War. Right now his version claims that the
actions of the Red Army and by Stalin may only be seen as heroic. This is of course
ridiculous and totally not of our time. Putin’s idea is to change the mind-set
of his people just like in 1984. In the novel the thought is that
if people don’t know better, they won’t demonstrate or be smart enough to
“overthink” the regime.
Another way in
which the Party influences its people is by changing the
language. The government’s ministry of Truth is designing a new language
called “Newspeak” which works like English but is censored. In the so-called
“Newspeak” there are new words added and some old English words censored out.
Words that are cancelled from “Newspeak” are; individuality, freedom, and
peace. These are words which could be a threat to the regime.
A threat to the
regime, maybe that’s another reason why Vladimir Putin changed the history of
the Second World War, which they by the way call the “Great Patriotic War”. The
crimes the Red Army committed are of a huge scale. There are estimation made
that the Russian army raped about 2 million German women. This is a fact Putin
will probably not acknowledge in his version of the history of the second world
war.
We as the world
must see 1984 as a warning for a totalitarian regime which
implements laws and constitutional changes to bridle its people and have
absolute power. Europe must protect its sovereignty and freedom for the sake of
the next generations!
