Syria is
nowadays a mess. The whole war within Syria is now lasting for about 2 years
and 9 months. The situation is terrible and especially for the civilians. Some
villages or suburbs are already closed off from the outside world for a few
months. Rumours say that people inside these closed of suburbs eat grass and
their pets. It was shown on a documentary of the Dutch news program Nieuwsuur,
in which a Syrian rebel showed the suburb in which he lived. It was terrible,
there wasn't much food and people were starving.
An
estimation of the United Nations says that there died approximately 120,000 -
130,000 people because of the Syrian war. This is an enormous number which
shows the scale of the war and what it has done to the population. Furthermore,
there has not been significant movement in the war. Maybe the frontiers have
moved a little but there has not been one side (rebels or Assad's army) which
have taken over the majority of the country.
The country
is divided into parts which are occupied by rebels, the government or Kurds in
the North of Syria. Today the war map look like this:
FSA = Free
Syrian Army
ISIS = Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
As you can
see, there is no significant part which belongs to one of the groups. It is
also very hard to determine the situation since there are not that many
journalists in Syria. There are some reporters from the rebels or from
civilians with an internet connection. One of them Skyped with Nieuwsuur, creating his energy by
inserting acetone in a generator combined with oil.
To cap it
all, there were chemical weapons during the war. Assad claims that they weren't
used. Under supervision of the United Nations Assad says he is willing to give
these weapons away and the UN will destroy them. However that is the main
concern, who will destroy these weapons? Do we thrust America destroying these
chemical weapons? And do we thrust Russia destroying these weapons? Which
country will want to destroy the chemical weapons? That are all questions which
will be answered in the future. For now, the war will not be over yet. It is an
enormous mess and the end isn't in the near future.
