The opening borders for Romania and Bulgaria

At January 1st the Dutch and other North-European countries will be fully opened for Romania and Bulgaria. That was four days ago. The inhabitants of Romania and Bulgaria will now be able to travel throughout the Europian Union freely and, like other EU-citizens, try to find a job in the Netherlands. What consequences will this new regulation have? And what do the proponents say? What are the points the opponents are trying to make? The opinions are widely divided not only in the Netherlands but moreover in the whole of the EU. Since January 1st the borders have been opened so in fact there is not really much the opponents of this regulation can do against the immigration of Bulgarians and Romanians. The minister of Social Affairs stated recently in the NRC – a Dutch newspaper- that the borders have been opened too early. He also claims that there is one big problem that's caused by the free traffic within the European Union. He says that it is causing a downward spiral in the working conditions. These working conditions get worse because most of the Romanian and Bulgarian employees are able to work for a lower wage than the Dutch employees. Exploitation of the EU employees could be one of the negative consequences of this regulation. Exploitation is of course gruesome and is not the purpose of the opening of borders within the EU, that is also the statement minister Asscher is trying to make. Another statement the opponents give is that through the open borders the Bulgarian or Romanian employees could snaffle the jobs of  citizens in our country. Due to the fact that in some regions the unemployment rate in the Netherlands is pretty high they do not want more employees searching for a job in their sector.    On the other hand, the European Union was constituted in such a way that borders were gradually opened in order to force countries to work and do business together more freely. According to economists free trade is beneficial to all participants, leading to more international trade, specialisation  and economic growth. Therefore there are positive as well as negative sides to this regulation. There is a lot to say about it and I think the discussion will not be ended by the opening of the borders.

Donald Trump: Unpresidented

If someone from 2009 was shown the quotes 1 and outbursts of Donald Trump from the last couple of months, he or she would be shocked. Devastated even. The correct word for his term is unprecedented. Or as I like to put it: unpresidented. The entire storm he created around his personality seems to be getting worse and worse. Every time when the public thinks "this must be the worst a president has ever said or done" he takes it to the next level. However this may be my opinion, Trump is different than every single one of his predecessors. He even differs from many other world leaders as well. He is totally undiplomatic, something which can be dangerous when dealing with leaders like Kim Jung Un from North Korea. Leaders who are used to more diplomatic communication than outing personal opinions on Twitter. A great example is the undermining of the entire nuclear deal with Iran, in which former President Obama and his staff put a lot of effort. 2 Let alone the Paris ...

Is there a solution to ISIL? The General Assembly discusses

During the last couple of months ISIL has taken over a huge part of the Middle East, mainly in Iraq or Syria. They changed their territory into IS (Islamic State) and are planning on expanding enormously.  At first the world just watched and stood by, until this week. The war has been declared to IS. President Obama said in his speech during the 69 th General Assembly of the UN today that he asks the world to cooperate against ISIL, who he calls a “network of death”. He build upon that by saying that this world is formed by “those who build the future, not those who destroy!”. There will not be a landing of US troops on Iraq soil again he claims, he believes that ISIL can be destroyed with bombardments. This is a strong statement which become weak if it would be necessary to invade Iraq and Syria eventually. It is a risk he is taking. President Obama was not the only one to speak on the General Assembly this afternoon. President Rouhani from Iran also gave a speech about IS...

What’s all the fuss with Iran about?

Lately Iran and America have been negotiating about a nuclear declaration. Iran has to follow rules set up by America and in exchange for that Iran gets freed from sanctions by the same America. Last week Rohani (the president of Iran) has claimed that he will only sign the deal when Iran is freed from all sanctions led up by the USA. Iranian civilians already celebrated the release from the sanctions last week. Will they be able to keep on partying? The deal which is about to be signed is more complicated than it seems to be. There are different types of sanctions coming from different countries. There are sanctions led up by the UN, the EU, and the USA. To make it more clear I could write in depth about the sanctions. However a video is way more convenient and shows how different news channels look at the sanctions. Let’s first look a video from RT (Russia Today), they have posted a video online in which they clearly explain the current sanctions and how to deal is doing: ...
