The war has
been declared to IS. President Obama said in his speech during the 69th
General Assembly of the UN today that he asks the world to cooperate against
ISIL, who he calls a “network of death”. He build upon that by saying that this
world is formed by “those who build the future, not those who destroy!”. There
will not be a landing of US troops on Iraq soil again he claims, he believes
that ISIL can be destroyed with bombardments. This is a strong statement which
become weak if it would be necessary to invade Iraq and Syria eventually. It is
a risk he is taking.
President Obama was not the only one
to speak on the General Assembly this afternoon. President Rouhani from Iran
also gave a speech about ISIL and what further steps could be taken against
ISIL. President Rouhani blamed intelligence agencies as he said : "Certain
intelligence agencies have put blades in the hand of madmen, who now spare no
one." To who would he refer? Is this a indirect blame on the US? Or
Russia?
Furthermore, President Rouhani
claimed that: "The right solution
to this quandary comes from within the region and regionally provided solution
with international support and not from outside the region."
Next up was President Cameron, he
held a truculent speech about ISIL. He pledged for action and believes that if
we (as the world community) do not take action ISIL will expand its borders
murderously. In addition to this he
claimed that some countries who supported Assad should not do this. He was once
his enemy and still is as he claims : “My enemy’s enemy is not my friend – it is
another enemy.” He knows that Assad is against ISIL too. For him that doesn’t
explicitly mean that Assad is not an enemy anymore or an ally either.
Hopefully this hornets’ nest will
all end up peacefully within the coming years. Since this is not a problem
which will be solved in a few months.
